Chapter 3: First Track Day

After having the car for three weeks, the first track weekend was here. The car was somewhat ready: race seat, harness, not much interior left. But was still shockingly unprepped in other areas: OE 145K mile shocks, bushings, and small, old tires. The plan is to run 17x11's with 315's on all 4 corners, but the wheels weren't here yet. So onto the car went a very used and abused set of 275 Nitto 555RII's on 17x9 Camaro SS wheels. This is not nearly enough tire for this car, espically on the rear (Stock size is 285!).

Go out for the first session, and the car is really loose. I get sideways in virtually ever corner. I do manage to keep it on the track, but it takes some work. Go out for the second session, again, very loose. This time I do go 4 wheels off. Turn in for 7 and get loose at the apex. Counter steer up the hill but run out of track. I did manage to go straight off. Drove back on track (without getting passed!) and head into the pits. No damage to the car, and the session is practically over.

After looking at the car, I notice the rear end seems to be higher than it was. Perhaps pulling the interior actually raised the rear. An increase in rear ride height would cause toe out, which would make the car seriously loose. A quick check with a tape measure shows 1/4" toe out....Luckily, the rear toe on a C4 adjustable without even jacking the car up. Change it to 1/4" toe in. Last two sessions of the day are much better. Car is still somewhat tail happy, but it is a lot more controlable.

The brakes felt so-so. Never had any real fade, but the pedal didn't feel that good. An inspection of the front rotors shows some pretty serious grooves. Coolant temps were reasonable (under 215), but oil temps were nuts. I saw 305 at some point. An oil cooler is at the top of the to do list.

Overall, not a bad first outing, but definately lots of room for improvement. Here are some pics shot by Patrick Duffy from turn 4. In the first one, you can see the wheels turned to the left in a right hand turn...Yeah, it was loose.
